This shot was actually an afterthought during a brief session on Carleton campus around 23:00 (well, as much of an aftershot a 15 second exposure can be). Definitely could never have achieved this on my S5200. The auto long-exposure noise reduction feature on my XTi is pretty smart, though it’s a bit annoying that it takes another full exposure and then takes another few seconds to do the processing, so a 15 second exposure turns into a 40 second affair. I’m surprised I managed to get anything as well-focused as I did. It’s pretty hard to manually focus on something hundreds of feet away squinting into a pentamirror viewfinder (bouncing off of five mirrors tends to reduce brightness). I’m rather new to night shooting (and this camera), so there’s lots for me to improve upon.
